Updating spm8Batch_beta channel with stuff in spm8Batch_alpha. @shijiaguo has been using the alpha channel to actively test for a while, so I will consider that effectively a +1 for diff review and go ahead and merge it.
However, @rcwelsh may want to take a look at the diff and see how I've changed localization, logging, and especially documentation. Many of these changes ought not be included if @rcwelsh is planning to release this code independently.
